On September 7, Council approved the development of Phase I of an Accessibility Strategy (pdf) to begin in 2019 with resources allocated in the 2019 operating budget.
Over 5% of Vancouver residents have some form of physical disability or mobility restriction. This includes people using wheelchairs, walkers, and canes. When you add their accompanying family and friends, approximately 50% of Vancouver residents are affected by poor access to buildings. And yet, there is currently no overarching City strategy or vision currently in place around accessibility. Consequently, there is lack of coordination between efforts of different departments and consistency between bylaws, policies and practices.
