Bridge Safety Fences

City council approves upgrades to the 1932 Art Deco bridge that include suicide-prevention fencing.

Addition of fencing to discourage suicides is among approved upgrades to the Burrard Bridge, which also include safety improvements to the north end at Pacific, an additional pedestrian path and bicycle lane. Critics express concern that the fences will damage the bridge’s heritage values and obscure views and highlight the city’s attitude towards risk-taking in the public realm, but the city believes the upgrades will provide a safer bridge, safer intersections for all road users and better connections for pedestrians and cyclists, with minimal impact on access and travel times.

Similar barriers have been installed on the Ironworkers Memorial (Second Narrows) Bridge.
