First Conservation Area: Shaughnessy

2015 Shaughnessy becomes Vancouver’s first heritage conservation area

City council approves the designation of Shaughnessy as Vancouver’s first heritage conservation area.

The designation was meant to preserve the character of heritage houses in Shaughnessy and to protect older houses in the neighbourhood.

Council approved work on the Heritage Action Plan in December 2013 to improve support for heritage conservation. The Shaughnessy designation is part of the action plan, which updates the city’s 1986 Heritage Conservation Program.
It is a planning tool that could be used in other areas of the city and was seen by some as a change in rules for owners of public property.
